Good Bits is a small album for the good things in your days, made by one person, Raneem Hossam. Your album lives on your phone. It only leaves your phone if you choose to back it up with Plus, and nobody sells it, shares it or reads it.
on your phone
- Your photos, captions, voice notes and favorites, and the day and time you saved each one.
- Photos are copied into the app with their hidden details (such as location and camera) removed.
- Your reminder time. Reminders are set on your phone; no server sends them.
- When you say a caption instead of typing it, the app asks your phone to turn speech into text on the phone itself. Good Bits never receives the sound.
Without an account, that's everything: nothing about your album is sent anywhere.
signing in (optional)
You can sign in with Apple or Google so your album can be backed up. Good Bits gets a code from Apple or Google that says it's you, and doesn't ask for or keep your name or email address. It also keeps:
- when your account was made, and when the app was first installed on your phone, so early users keep what they were promised;
- with Apple, an encrypted token, used only to ask Apple to forget the connection when you delete your account.
backup with Plus (optional)
If you're signed in with Plus, the app backs up your album so it comes back on a new phone, and keeps your phones in step.
- What: your photos (with full-quality copies kept for printing), captions, voice notes, favorites, the day each good bit belongs to, the time of day you saved it, and when it was made, changed or removed.
- Where: on Cloudflare's servers, in private storage. Everything travels over encrypted connections, files are stored under random names, and the app fetches them through links that stop working after a few minutes.
- Who can see it: only you, through the app. I don't look at your photos or captions, and they never go into logs.
- Removing a good bit: its caption is cleared from the backup straight away, and its photos and voice note are deleted within 30 days. A small marker that it was removed stays, so your other phones remove it too.
buying Plus
Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play) takes the payment; Good Bits never sees your card. The app uses RevenueCat to check which plan you have. RevenueCat gets a random id for you and your Good Bits purchases from the store, nothing else.
the "your book" sheet
Printed books may come later. To learn whether people want one, the app counts three things: opening the sheet, reserving a book, and leaving an email. Each count carries a random number made only for this, a rough page count (such as "7 to 29"), whether it's an iPhone or Android phone, the app version, your phone's region setting (such as "GB") and the date. It is never linked to your account or your album.
If you choose to leave your email there, it's kept apart from everything else, with your region setting and the date, and used once: to tell you when books can be ordered. Ask and I'll delete it.
crash reports
If the app crashes, it sends a report to Sentry with the error, your phone model, its system version and the app version, so I can fix it. Reports are cleaned of captions, photos, names and email addresses before they leave your phone.
server logs
When the app connects, Cloudflare sees your phone's internet (IP) address, as any website would, and uses it to keep the service running and limit abuse. Good Bits doesn't store it. Short-lived logs say that a request happened and whether it worked, never what was in it, and are deleted after a few days.
what Good Bits doesn't do
- No ads.
- No tracking you across other apps or websites.
- No selling or sharing your data.
- No analytics beyond the book counts above.
who helps run it
- Cloudflare: servers and storage for backup.
- Apple and Google: sign-in and payments.
- RevenueCat: checking purchases.
- Sentry: crash reports.
Each gets only what's described above, and only to do that job. Their servers may be in another country than yours.
your choices
- Take it with you: Settings, then "export my album", gives you a zip of every photo, voice note and caption.
- Delete it: Settings, then "delete account", removes your backup, your account and every sign-in from the server at once. The album on your phone stays until you delete the app.
- Anything else, like a copy of what's stored about you or a correction: write to me and I'll answer.
children
Good Bits isn't made for children under 13 and doesn't knowingly collect anything from them.
changes
If this page changes, the new version goes here with a new date. Big changes will also be mentioned in the app.
